The Overhire Assistant Stage Manager supports the production of concerts and special events at The New School's College of Performing Arts. Reporting to the Event Production Manager, they facilitate stage moves, backstage operations, and artist entrances, coordinate logistics and paperwork with the Stage Manager or Production Manager, and assist with soundchecks and technical rehearsals to ensure events run smoothly. This is an on-call, as-needed position without guaranteed weekly hours.
Responsibilities
- Create, edit, manage and distribute show paperwork in collaboration with the Stage Manager/Production Manager
- Manage onstage and backstage activities including stage moves and artist wrangling
- Communicate with creative team, cast and crew
- Be familiar with all stage management responsibilities on a production
- Supervise stage crew including student workers (as needed)
- Manage backstage spaces including backstage wings, green room(s) and artist holding
- Spike furniture and other items
- Other duties related to the successful execution of the event as assigned
- Additional responsibilities as assigned
Requirements
- One year previous experience in assistant stage management or three years experience as a production assistant
- Strong analytical skills and ability to develop creative approaches to complex issues
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Interpersonal skills that include management, teamwork and collaboration, and conflict resolution
- Time and task management skills, including re-prioritization and an ability to work graciously under strict time constraints
- Must be able to remain standing for long periods, bend down and/or lift and move up to 50 pounds repeatedly
- Experienced or able to learn and develop fluency in The New School’s suite of applications including Google Suite, Microsoft Office, WorkDay, Asimut and 25Live.
Nice to have
- Three years previous experience as assistant stage manager, experience as stage manager
- Familiarity working on concerts and/or special events
- Ability to step in and call a show
- Experience reading stage plots
- Ability to read music
