The AV Technician supports the digital learning environment and instructional media needs of instructors and students at UW-Stout Polytechnic. The role involves recommending, designing, troubleshooting, and maintaining classroom audio-visual technology, including control systems, videoconferencing, and distance education equipment. The technician provides training and consultation to faculty and staff, assists with AV planning and lifecycle replacement, and contributes to campus projects involving instructional technology. Reporting to the Teaching, Learning and Technology Director, the position works closely with faculty and staff across the institution to ensure reliable, accessible learning spaces.
Responsibilities
- Integrates, maintains, monitors, and troubleshoots moderately complex, routine, and varied services, systems, networks, applications, and instructional technology, including control systems and hardware for audio-visual (AV), videoconferencing, and distance education, following established processes and procedures.
- Provide technical skills to troubleshoot audio, video, media control systems, and instructional media hardware in the learning environment as required.
- Provide media and AV solutions that support instructional activities, ensure alignment with pedagogical goals and technology standards.
- Maintains and operates technical systems and infrastructure.
- Participate in campus projects and initiatives by representing instructional technology design, needs, and principles.
- Consult with faculty, staff, and students to plan, design, and implement AV and AI-enabled instructional technologies for classrooms and learning spaces.
- Consult with faculty, staff and students on audio, video, and visual design and production strategy.
- Provide training to instructors and staff on instructional technology applications, systems, media hardware and software, and best practices that support the digital learning environment.
- Participates in the evaluation of new vendor software releases and impact. Documents and communicates system enhancements and changes.
- Assists with the planning and coordination of system resources, upgrades, security, implementations, and integrations.
- Configures, maintains, upgrades, develops, and tests IT systems, infrastructure and services in alignment with industry best practices.
- Create and update instructional support documentation and materials including tutorials, user guides, and other web-based resources to facilitate technology adoption.
- Assist in the planning, development, and management of classroom media strategies, including scheduling, maintenance, lifecycle replacement, and resource allocation.
- Maintain inventory for replacement as well as upgrade AV and media equipment in learning spaces, ensuring compliance with university standards and readiness for instructional use.
- Contribute to the assessment and evaluation of instructional technology effectiveness, gathering feedback, and making recommendations for improvements.
- Partner with stakeholders to pilot the implementation of AI-enabled and emerging instructional technologies to improve reliability, accessibility, and learning outcomes.
- Serves as a point of contact for internal and external stakeholders to identify needs, provide solutions, and communicate issue updates and resolutions.
- Assists with the planning and implementation of small to medium technical projects as needed.
- Perform related work as required to support the activities of Learning Technology Services (e.g., video support, AV and media classroom technology, Learning Glass, etc.)
- Participate in ongoing professional development to stay current with emerging trends in instructional technology to continuously enhance the university’s learning environment.
- This position will require the ability to move and carry equipment (up to 30 lbs.) and navigate environments when installing systems. This will require standing for periods of time. This work will include climbing ladders and the use of power tools.
Requirements
- Associate’s degree or equivalent experience.
- Familiarity with emerging AV technology.
- Experience with presentation technology using control systems such as Crestron, Extron, and Q-SYS.
- Strong customer service skills.
- Ability to troubleshoot and solve problems.
Nice to have
- Familiarity with distance education, audio/video conferencing systems.
- Experience working with the administration of video conferencing platforms such as Teams, Zoom.
- Experience training the use of classroom technology.
- Experience working with secure network enterprise systems.
- Understanding of instructional learning principles.
- Multimedia support experience, preferably with higher education.
- Experience supervising others.
- Demonstrated organizational skills with the ability to manage complex tasks and projects.
- Demonstrated exceptional oral, written, interpersonal communication skills.
- Familiarity with AI use in higher education technology.
